I found this very helpful! I recently started to expand my Alpha 77 and Infrared modified Alpha 65 cameras by getting a tilt-shift lens, which is manual focus. Then use remote camera control via the usual USB cable. If you have a second monitor (or TV) that has HDMI input you can simply plug it into that. All images taken are saved in the defined directory (no images saved to camera while using remote).

I can immediately do some edits or adjustments or continue taking photos (photos will continue to auto import to LR5 - last image taken shows in the LR5 Develop screen). The photo file auto imports to the predefined directory and is visible in LR5 Develop screen. I click on the Shutter Button on the "Remote Camera Control". When using this setup I see a Live View on the second monitor.

Also note that this is a completely self-supported setup as Intensity Extreme is bus powered via Thunderbolt so it makes for a portable solution if you work in the field. I see it coming especially handy as I start getting into video after all – both of these products are designed for videographers, but they do the trick for photography as well. This solution is not really cheap ($299 for Intensity Extreme, $99 for ScopeBox, $50 Thunderbolt 6' cable) and it’s certainly not perfect, but it works for my needs. Adobe LR5 auto-imports the capture into your library for cataloguing and PP.RemoteCameraControl activates shutter from your Mac via MiniUSB and saves the capture to a pre-configured folder on your Mac.Essentially, you get to see the exact image you'll be working with in PP: composition, shadows, framing, colors.

  • ScopeBox reads the live view signal from Intensity Extreme and allows full-screen live view on your Mac – you see exactly what your camera sees and can make whatever adjustments necessary before capturing the frame (the software is pretty slick with Focus Peaking, Framing Guides, Histograms, Overlays, etc.).
  • Intensity Extreme does it’s magic and sends HDMIs signal to Mac via Thunderbolt (this is the critical piece of the puzzle – essentially your new HDMI IN port).
  • Sony Alpha sends live view signal to Intensity Extreme via HDMI.
  • Adobe LR5 – I’m sure Aperture or others would suit just fine.
  • ScopeBox – live view software (comes with a 2 week free trial).
  • BlackmagicDesign Intensity Extreme – HDMI/Thunderbolt capture and playback hardware device.
  • Sony Alpha with HDMI video out that supports RemoteCameraControl via USB (A99, A77M2, probably all new Alpha models that came out in the past year forward).

I especially wished for live view on my 27” iMac when working with macro photography.
